PTFE Powder has excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability, weather resistance, temperature resistance, non-stickiness, flame retardancy and self-lubrication. It not only keeps the excellent properties of PTFE, but also has many unique properties, good dispersibility and even blending, which can improve the performance of the base materials. It is widely used as an additive in the following application fields.

The modification of engineering plastics by PTFE powder mainly concentrates on the two aspects: anti-wear lubrication and anti-drop flame retardant.

1. Anti-wear lubrication

Most engineering plastics have high surface friction coefficient, so it is necessary to use external lubricants in some occasions, which limits the application of engineering plastics in occasions where external lubricants are not allowed. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder has very low surface energy and excellent self-lubricating properties. The oil-free lubricating composites with low surface friction coefficient can be prepared by blending PTFE powder with engineering plastics. At present, almost all engineering plastics with modified lubricating properties are mixed with PTFE ultra-fine powder or micro-powder. For example, adding 5% – 15% PTFE micropowder, the parts made from polyamide (PA), polyacetal (POM), polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) and other high performance engineering resins can significantly improve their wear, friction and viscous sliding properties, which can be used to manufacture gears, bearings and pulleys, and can also be used to replace the metal parts that play a role of lubrication in order to reduce the weight of workpieces and reduce maintenance costs.

2. Anti-drop flame retardant

Anti-dropping agent is mainly used in plastic materials that require flame retardant grade up to V0. It can prevent melting dropping and improve flame retardant performance. It can still meet the requirements of standard UL V-0 when reducing the amount of flame retardant, and at the same time reduce costs and enhance product competitiveness. High molecular weight PTFE(molecular weight of about 4 million to 5 million) fibrosis under the shear force of the screw to form a network structure, thus playing a role in anti-dripping.

PTFE micropowder can improve the surface and volume properties of rubber, such as silicone rubber, fluorine rubber, EPDM and polychlorobutadiene, adding 5% of PTFE micropowder can improve the friction properties, wear resistance and demoulding behavior of the main polymers, improve the breaking strength of rubber with no obvious damage to the elasticity of rubber, which can reduce the tearing phenomenon of the rubbers during the demouldingg process.

Adding PTFE powder into lubricating oil and grease can improve the lubricity of the materials under high pressure and high temperature. Even with the loss of base oil, PTFE powder can play a role as dry lubricant. The viscosity of the oil can be significantly increased by adding PTFE powder into silicone oil, mineral oil or paraffin oil. The amount of PTFE powder depends on the viscosity of the base oil, the consistency of the lubricant required and the application field. Usually the amount of PTFE powder added is 5% – 30% (mass fraction).PTFE powder with grease, rosin, mineral oil, can yield high quality lubricants, which are widely used in ball bearings, wear-resistant bearings, lubricating guideways, sliding rods, open gears, chemical equipment valves, etc. In addition, PTFE powder can also be used as a dry lubricant like graphite and molybdenum disulfide, and the effect is excellent. PTFE powder mixed with propane and butane can be used as non-adhesive antiwear spraying agent, rocket additives and so on. PTFE micropowder can also be used as an effective lubricant thickening agent in lubricants.

PTFE fine powder has the characteristics of low friction coefficient and low surface tension, which can prevent abrasion, reduce wear, self-lubricating, improve corrosion resistance and reduce moisture absorption in coating & paints. Especially for non-sticky products, PTFE fine powder can be added in a large proportion in the formula, which can eventually produce anti-pollution, non-sticking, waterproof and oilproof effect. It is widely used in non-stick pot coatings, electronic plastic coatings, PCM coil coatings, rubber & elastomer coatings, powder coatings, high corrosion resistant fluorine coatings and other fields.

It should be noted that the sintered spherical PTFE powder has a large specific gravity and often does not float on the surface. Therefore, when the particle size is about the same as the thickness of the dry film, better protection effect can be obtained. If the particle size is larger than the thickness of the film, it will extinct, but if it is smaller than the thickness of the film, it will only provide the effect of reducing wear. If the effect of lubrication and non-sticking is needed, we can either choose the PTFE powder with the appropriate particle size or PTFE powder without sintering.

PTFE powder can be used as anti-wear agent in inks. It can improve wear resistance, lubricity, surface smoothness, agglomeration and glossiness of inks, and make printed products resistant to friction. PTFE powder can also reduce clogging, be applied to satisfy the needs of fast printers, and effectively avoid paper bonding. In order to ensure the best improvement effects of PTFE fine powder, the particle size of PTFE fine powder is required to be close to the thickness of ink film in many ink applications.
